Court Amsterdam

START

KOLEN supplied and installed natural stone for the construction of the New Amsterdam Court House (NACH) on behalf of Rijksvastgoedbedrijf.

At the intersection of Parnassusweg on the Zuidas in Amsterdam, the NACH will be the new home of the Amsterdam Court. The new building will accommodate more than 200 judges, 800 professionals, 1,000 court employees and will enter 150,000 daily visitors each year. This makes the NACH currently the largest court in the Netherlands. For the building of more than 47,000 m², KOLEN supplied a total of more than 25,300 m² of natural stone. Of this, 22,000 m² consists of Marone Caramello: a gray honed marble, with dark grey, greenish and purplish veins, which has been used for both the interior and exterior of the building. The remaining 3300 m² consists of a greenish limestone used for, among other things, the stairs of the interior of the building.

In 1999, the decision was made to completely demolish the old Court of Amsterdam, because the building at that time compromised the current, modern standards and renovation was not an option. In 2010, the final decision was made to build the new court on the exact same location. The new building has 10 floors and has 7 large courtrooms, 23 smaller courtrooms, 20 council chambers and a large terrace with 50 workshops. Sheltered areas and halls are available for judges, interested parties and representatives of the Public Prosecution Service to enter the ancillary rooms, which ensures the security of the new building.

The NACH has a stately and open design, which the gray marble lends itself perfectly to. The gray color provides a feeling of peace and security, but at the same time exudes authority. The stone perfectly captures the natural light through the large windows from the outside, providing a transparent, accessible and optimal experience when entering the Court or viewed from the outside. The functional building offers workers and visitors an open view of the city and gives bystanders the opportunity to look inside and thus connect with the building. The aim of giving the New Court of Amsterdam a humane and accessible image has thus been completely achieved and KOLEN is grateful to have been able to participate in this.
