// CERAMIC

The word "ceramics" comes from the Greek keramos, which means drinking vessel or pottery vessel. Originally, the word was used to denote objects made of fired clay. Traditionally, ceramics are therefore based on clay (or silicates). Ceramics are a material that is neither a metal nor a polymer. Examples of ceramics are, for example, pottery, stoneware and porcelain, but also glass, diamonds, superconductors and implants can also be considered. Ceramics are created by heating (in an oven, for example), sometimes in combination with pressure, with at least two elements present. One of these elements is non-metallic and the other may be metallic or non-metallic.

// THE VENUS OF DOLNI VESTONICE

The Venus of Dolní Věstonice is a statue of a female ceramic nude, one of the oldest ceramic objects in the world. It is 111 mm long and 43 mm wide, made from an improperly baked mixture of loam and bone meal, and was found broken into two pieces. As with other figurines from this period, the breasts and hips are strongly accentuated, but the face has nothing individual; the eyes are shown with slanting slits. The age is estimated at 29,000 to 25,000 BC. This makes it part of the Gravettien.
