Premios Macael Award // Field of Honor Loenen

nov. 16, 2021

Loenen Paviljoen, the project for which KAAN Architecten has been honored, is a multi-purpose building dedicated to the commemoration of the Dutch victims during World War II and more recent international conflicts, located on the National Field of Honor in Loenen, near Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.

KAAN Architecten has created a new conceptual pavilion with strategically placed stone walls and floors, combined with open ceilings that reveal treetops and open skies that accentuate the alternation between open and closed.

In addition, they needed a natural stone with excellent quality and adequate performance for the climatic differences it had to endure, with an aesthetic in earth tones and white veins to give the different surfaces a vibrant look.

In collaboration with Kolen Natuursteen and Marmoles Gutierrez Mena, KAAN Architecten chose Sierra Elvira Marble for this project because of its beautiful natural appearance and sustainable quality.

The project includes more than 2500 m² of Sierra Elvira marble in a honed finish in large pieces of 3 cm thick for the interior and exterior cladding of the building, creating a perfect harmony between the color of the stone and the nature of the surrounding environment.

In November 2020, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands officially opened the National Veteran Cemetery Loenen.

This prize is a recognition of the ambition of the Loenen National Veteran Cemetery Foundation, the quality of the design by KAAN Architecten and the commitment and cooperation of all parties involved.
